of the Faithful [=Voce dei fedeli], una organizzazione cattolica
internazionale di laici invita tutti i cattolici, laici, preti e religiosi a
unirsi per richiedere alla Santa Sede la revisione del celibato obbligatorio
per i preti diocesani. Chiediamo una revisione seria e profonda da condurre
senza pregiudizi, sulla base dei presupposti teologici, della storia, della psicologia, della
sociologia e delle attuali esigenze e sfide pastorali.
"Abbiamo deciso di
rompere col passato su questo tema perché riteniamo poter presentare l'evidenza
che il celibato obbligatorio sia legato ad una cultura istituzionale di
segretezza e coperture", afferma Mary Pat Fox, il Presidente di VOTF. Mary
inoltre asserisce, "Riteniamo sia nostra responsabilità esprimerci su
questo tema, e sia di responsabilità della Santa Sede interessarsene".
"Richiedere tale
modifica è in linea con gli obiettivi di Voice of the Faithful sin dalle sue
origini nel 2002. Siamo interessati ai cambiamenti strutturali nella chiesa
cattolica per eliminare la cultura del silenzio e il clericalismo che sono
stati preponderanti negli ultimi decenni anche in relazione agli abusi sessuali
del clero", ha detto la loro rappresentante, la signoraFox.
Questa iniziativa
annunciata era già in discussione da nove mesi e si è manifestata in
collaborazione con il Priest Support Group (Gruppo di Supporto dei
Preti), il Consiglio di Rappresentanza Nazionale di VOTF e i responsabili
nazionali di VOTF.

of the Faithful, an international organization of Catholic laity invites fellow
Catholic laity, priests and religious to join us in calling upon the Holy See
to conduct an ecclesial review of mandatory celibacy for diocesan priests. We
call for a serious extensive, unbiased review to be conducted without
prejudging the outcome, utilizing the insights of theology, history,
psychology, sociology, and current pastoral needs and challenges.
"We decided to break with our past
silence on this matter because of what we believe to be a growing body of
evidence linking mandated celibacy with an institutional culture of secrecy and
cover up," stated VOTF President Mary Pat Fox. She further stated,
"We believe it is our responsibility to speak up on this matter, and the
responsibility of the Holy See to address it."
"Calling for this review is
consistent with the goals Voice of the Faithful has championed since its
inception in 2002. We are committed to the types of structural change in the
Catholic Church needed to prevent the culture of secrecy and clericalism that
was so fundamental for the decades of cover-up of widespread clergy sexual
abuse", said Fox.
This newly announced initiative has been
under discussion for nine months and was developed in collaboration between the
Priest Support Group, the VOTF National Representative Council, and the VOTF
National Officers.
